Captains Report: KR1 - Karāpiro Christmas Regatta
On Thursday the 15th of December, our Junior and Senior athletes made the journey down to Cambridge and competed in the Karāpiro Christmas Regatta.
The day was spent rigging boats and preparing for the first day of racing on Friday. It was the first Karāpiro regatta of the season and the first time racing down a two-kilometer course this year.
The first day saw heats for all the school events. Some highlights included the Girls U15 Quad and U17 Quad which both placed third qualifying for the B final, the Boys U15 Quad and U16 Quad which placed 4th qualifying for the B final, the Boys U17 Four that placed 2nd qualifying for the A final and Leo who placed 3rd in the U16 Single and ultimately made the A final.
Saturday saw the heats for the club events. The Men Intermediate Quad placed 6th earning a spot in the B final, and both the Men’s Intermediate Eight and Girls Intermediate Octi made A finals. Excitingly the Men’s Novice Double and Intermediate Four both won their heat preparing them well for their A finals.
The two days of heats provided many encouraging results, with 30 Taka crews competing in various school-age and club events and making over 10 A and B finals. A special mention to the Men’s Intermediate Four of Charlie, Ollie, Toby S, and Taylor coxed by Ashlee who took out the A final. Well done to everyone who raced over the weekend and we’re sure that the process of racing can be built upon and refined as we head towards summer camp and future regattas.
Thank you to all the coaches and parent volunteers who made this weekend possible. Particularly to Mauricio, who coached his last regatta for us as he is returning to Chile after Summer Camp.
